Three Reasons Why Sugar is Sabatoging Your Health

Today's post is day five of my ten day series, Ten Ways to Tone Up in Ten Days. The focus is to strengthen our arms and get our postpartum abs back in shape. If you missed the first three posts, visit Day 1:Rebounding, Day 2: Cran-Water and Day 3:Weight Training.

It is not good to eat much honey, nor is it glorious to seek one's own glory. Proverbs 25:27

3 Reasons Sugar is Sabotaging Your Health

Toned in Ten Day 4: No Sugar

1. Sugar and cancer are linked. President of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, Craig Thompson states "many pre-cancerous cells would never acquire the mutations that turn them into malignant tumors if they weren't being driven by insulin to take up more and more blood sugar and metabolize it." Sugar also promotes heart disease, obesity and diabetes.

2. Sugar lowers immune function. According to Dr. Sears, "Eating or drinking 100 grams (8 tbsp.) of sugar, the equivalent of two- and-a-half 12-ounce cans of soda, can reduce the ability of white blood cells to kill germs by 40 percent. The immune-suppressing effect of sugar starts less than thirty minutes after ingestion and may last for five hours." We are very intentional about the amount of sugar that goes into our children's mouths, especially during cold and flu season. We want our children's immune systems to be at peak performance to ward of any harmful germies.

3. Sugar causes premature aging.  A study published in the British Journal of Dermatology found that sugar damages the fibers that keep our skin firm, collagen and elastin. This leads to saggy skin and wrinkles. The sugar found in fruit is different as has antioxidants, fiber and nutrients help to prevent the signs of aging. So next time you are craving something sweet, grab a banana which has potassium to help keep our skin soft and supple.

These are just a handful of many reasons why sugar is harmful to our bodies. I am not a doctor but I can personally attest to better mental clarity, greater energy levels and less joint pain when I am abstaining from sugar.
We do consume sugar in our home but we prefer honey or maple syrup. All things in moderation. I love what Proverbs 25:16 has to say,"Have you found honey? Eat only what you need, That you not have it in excess and vomit it." that last part :D

Please join me tomorrow as we discuss the benefits of psyllium husks.

Grace and peace,
